Windows File sharing is a replacement for VNC
I've updated my home network.
All the drives, niine in all, are shared over the home network.
This will allow me to sit on my couch and edit videos without having to move the video file around from drive to drive. I can also run the media center laptop and play movies on theat computer's screen, from the couch.
In order to set up sharing on the Microsoft Windows based network, several steps have to be followed.
Go into the Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel.
On the left side go into Media streaming options.
Choose 'Local Network' if your drives appear in the drop-down list, 'All Networks' if they're there there.
Choose 'Allow All'.
Go back
Go into 'Advanced Sharing Settings'. I set everything to on except 'Password Protected Sharing'.
The encryption method is trivial if you're offliine most of the time. If your network is on 24/7, the 128-bit encryption is recommended.
Right-click on each drive and setup 'Sharing' and 'Security' in the 'Properties' menu.
Check the 'Share' box under the 'Share' tab. Then click the 'Advanced Sharing' button.
Open the 'Permissions' form. In the upper half add 'Everyone,' if not already there.
Check the 'Full' box at the bottom for read/write capabilities.
On the 'Security' form, open and click 'Edit', then 'Add'. Enter 'Everyone' in the form. Check the 'Full Control' box in the bottom form. Click OK.
Clickk OK. The permissions will be set for every file on the drive. This can take a while.
Click OK when done, to all open forms.
You may need to reboot the computer.
VNC is still needed for communications with the Raspberry Pi 4 Desktop GUI and is useful for bridging computers with different operating systems.
VNC worked for playing videos on the media center laptop from the couch, but skipped a lot of frames and was 'jumpy' in general on the laptop on the couch. Now, I ccan play and watch videos on either laptop with better than acceptable viewing quality.
A note: RealVNC would not work untill after I had iinstalled the TightVNC server and client. The server needs to be running.and is installed to run at boot time.
